Process For Becoming A Foster Parent

Will it be Easy? Nope. Will it be worth it? Absolutely.

Step 1: Attend a Free Information Session

Haven offers a free information session on a monthly basis. This session is designed to provide you with an overview of the foster care system and with details of how Haven’s Foster Care Program works. We ask you to come to the session with an open mind, an open heart, and notebook, and we will provide the rest!

Step 2: Complete Intake, Foster Care Worksheet, and Call With A Haven Foster Care Case Manager

If you feel like foster care might be right for you, after attending an information session, a Haven Case Manager will be in contact with you. We will ask you to complete an intake form, a foster parent worksheet, and have a call with a case manager. We want to provide you with as much information as possible about foster care, and allow you the time to decide if foster care is the right fit for your family. Our goal is to educate and prepare potential foster families to make sure that this is the right choice for you.

Step 3: Join our Haven Foster Care Program

When you have completed the step above, you will join our Haven Foster Care Program! You will be assigned a case manager who will be with you throughout the entire process. You will receive support, continued education, access to training, and continue on your journey to becoming a foster parent!

Step 4: Complete your Home Study

Haven will complete your home study at no cost to you. Your case manager will provide you with a home study application and a checklist of required documents. When you have completed the application and gathered the documents, a case manager will come to your house for a home visit. You will also need to complete either 15 hours of training (for non-therapeutic placements) or 30 hours of training (for therapeutic placements).

Step 5: Develop A Family Profile

Your case manager will provide you with a template of how a family profile should look and will provide guidance and feedback on your profile. County workers may use your profile when determining if you are a good fit for a specific placement.
